Summary of contents

MODULE 1

Module 1 (Understanding language, methodology and resources for teaching) is assessed externally through 2 x 90-minute written examinations in either (usually first Wednesday of) June or Decemer, on practical and theoretical aspects of English language and teaching. Written exam in June or December

Topic 1: Theoretical perspectives on language acquisition and language teaching.

Content: a) Historical and current theories of first and second language acquisition.
b) How these theories influence teaching methodologies.

Topic 2: Different teaching approaches and methodologies, including current developments.

Content: a) Teaching methodologies, both mainstream and experimental. b) The effectiveness of these methodologies in different learning environments.

Topic 3: Language systems and learners' linguistic problems.

Content: a) Features of language systems (e.g. meaning, form, pronunciation and use). b) Teaching methodology choices in language systems.

Topic 4: Language skills and learners' problems.

Content: a) Features of language skills (e.g. the subskills and strategies needed by learners) b) Teaching methodology choices in language skills.

Topic 5: Knowledge of resources, materials and reference sources for language learning.

Content: The practical uses of a range of resources in a range of teaching contexts.

Topic 6: Key assessment concepts and terminology.

Content: How to apply key assessment principles, such as validity and reliability, to classroom-based assessment.

MODULE 2

Module 2 (Developing Professional Practice) focuses on the elements of planning and teaching a lesson, and is assessed through a portfolio of coursework, including 4 observed lessons, with full lesson plans and 2500-word background written assignments, and a professional development assignment. Assessment completed during course.

Topic 1: The language learner and the language learning context

Content: a) Adapting teaching for different abilities, motivations and learning styles.

b) Applying knowledge and understanding of factors affecting teaching to your practice.
Topic 2: Preparation for teaching English language learners

Content: a) Planning lessons that actively engage all learners. b) Choosing methodologies and materials, with reference to underpinning theories and principles.

Topic 3: Evaluating, selecting and using resources and materials for teaching purposes.

Content: a) Developing selection criteria to choose materials. b) Creating resources for different learning contexts. c) Evaluating the effectiveness of materials used.

Topic 4: Managing and supporting learning.

Content: a) Creating a constructive learning atmosphere. b) Using a range of teaching and learning strategies which are appropriate to learners' needs and context. c) Giving appropriate feedback to all learners on their progress.

Topic 5: Evaluation of lesson preparation and teaching

Content: a) Developing evaluation criteria to judge the effectiveness of preparation and teaching. b) Using evaluation feedback to improve lesson planning and teaching. c) Developing critical reflection skills to identify areas for ongoing professional development.

Topic 6: Observe and evaluate other teachers' lessons

Content: a) Evaluating other teachers' lessons using knowledge of teaching and learning strategies. b) Providing supportive and constructive feedback to other teachers.

Topic 7: Professionalism and opportunities for professional development.

Content: a) Reflecting on feedback to develop as a teacher. b) Reflecting on the standards of professional practice. c) Engaging in Continuing Professional Development. d) Identifying possible career paths and specialisms.

MODULE 3

Module 3 (Extending practice and English language teaching specialisation) is assessed externally through an extended written assignment of 4,500 words on a specialist area of English language teaching such as Business English, Young Learners, English for Specific Purposes, English for Academic Purposes, Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL), ELT Management, Learners with Special Requirements, in which you design a course for a specific group of learners. Assessment submitted June or December.  

Option 1

This module focuses on needs analysis, syllabus design, course planning and assessment.

You will carry out an independent investigation, leading to the design of a course programme related to one of the following specialisms:

  • Business English

  • Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) / Embedded ESOL

  • English for Academic Purposes

  • English for Specific Purposes

  • ESOL learners with literacy needs

  • Language development for teachers

  • Language support (e.g. on mainstream teaching programmes, specialist skills support)

  • Teaching English to learners with special requirements, e.g. visual/hearing impairment, dyslexia, autistic spectrum disorders (ASD)

  • Teaching examination classes

  • Teaching in a non-English-speaking environment

  • Teaching in an English-speaking environment

  • Teaching learners online, or through distance/blended learning

  • Teaching monolingual classes

  • Teaching multilingual classes

  • Teaching one-to-one

  • Teaching young learners or young adults (specified age group required, within a 5-year range e.g. 8-13, 14-19).


Option 2

This module focuses on situation analysis, planning and implementing change.          You will carry out an independent situation analysis, leading to the design of a change proposal in one of the following specialisms:

  • Academic management

  • Human resource management

  • Customer service

  • Marketing.

To successfully complete this module, you will need to have access to management data from a relevant language teaching context.



Assessment

How to register

You can enter for any of the Delta modules by registering at ALS Delta Centre.

Before contacting us, please check you meet the following criteria:

  • Do you have at least one year's experience of teaching English?

  • Is your English good enough to teach at a range of levels? (Minimum CEFR Level C1-C2 or above.)

You will normally have an initial English language teaching qualification, such as CELTA. ALS Delta Centre may still accept you on to a Delta course, if you can demonstrate that you would be likely to complete a course successfully, e.g. by giving evidence of previous successful study.
